Taylor | Pittsburgh, PA

taylor-concussion-storyIn October 2015, Taylor was in a serious car accident. Initially, Taylor felt fine aside from a few bumps and bruises. However, after the first few days she started developing other symptoms.

Concussion Symptoms

Taylor started to experience:

  • Depression
  • A short temper
  • Slow cognition
  • Emotional outbursts such as yelling and punching

Concussion Diagnosis

Taylor sought out a local primary care physician and was told with rest the symptoms would go away. After a few weeks of not being able to control her emotions, Taylor wanted a second opinion on what was causing these changes. She was referred to the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program where Micky Collins, PhD, confirmed that she had sustained a concussion.

Managing the Concussion

While undergoing treatment at UPMC, Taylor received vestibular therapy since her eyes weren’t working in unison. In addition to light physical therapy, Taylor also began doing yoga to help regain her balance.

Concussion Recovery

Taylor was cleared in January 2016 and credits Dr. Collins and the concussion team for helping her feel like herself again.

“Dr. Collins was amazing. I’ve never met anyone like him. He’s a genius,” said Taylor. “His entire staff is incredible and I’m lucky to have been treated by them.”
