Concussion Research in the News
This study, published in the October 2014 issue of Neurology, uses the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Sports Concussion Program as a model for success in the clinical management and research of concussions. The article emphasizes UPMC’s multidisciplinary approach to the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of concussion.
A team of researchers at UPMC led by Anne Mucha, PhD, developed vestibular/ocular motor screening (VOMS) to detect symptoms of a concussion that most other tests miss. VOMS can indicate what type of concussion a patient has with 90 percent accuracy.
Anthony Kontos, PhD, and his team of researchers are partnering with hockey helmet creator Bauer to study concussion in youth hockey players. Hockey players from a local Pittsburgh high school will wear helmets outfitted with sensors that will track any hits a player receives.
